OakTown 4-H Projects

Beekeeping — WAIT LIST ONLY

Project Leaders: Terry P., Marisol Q.
Meeting Time: One Sunday each month; 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm
Ages: 7+
Project Size: 8

Learn about bee colonies, how to work safely with bees, types of hives, parts of the hive, how to identify workers, drones and queen bees, how to identify nectar, honey and pollen. Hands on hive inspections, possible hive building and repair.

Cooking

Project Leaders: Annette O., Natasha M.
Meeting Time: Saturday, Oct 18th, 10:30 am; meeting times will be Saturdays at 10:30 am at members home near the Oakland Zoo.
Ages: 5 – 9 years old
Project Size: 10

For young kids (most under 11 years old). Basic cooking class discovering different whole foods and learning basic measurements and food preparation. i.e. bringing different types of peppers, cutting and tasting them, drawing the different peppers and deciding which tastes they prefer. Great opportunity for brand new 4-H members to learn basic record keeping.

Gardening (Vegetables and Crops)

Meeting Time: Tentative, Sunday afternoons beginning in mid-October
Ages: 7+ years old, (5/6 with parental supervision)
Project Size: 15

Learn about vegetable crops you can grow year-round! Help with the Alameda County Garden Field Day and exhibit at the Alameda County Fair.

Horse Careers

Meeting Time: 4th Monday, 6:00 pm – 7:30 pm at Anthony Chabot Equestrian Center

Field trips to interview various "equine business owners" in the upcoming 4-H NEW YEAR! Including: the equine hospital at Golden Gate fields, the owner of Western Saddlery in Pleasanton, our concessionaire with the EAST BAY REGIONAL PARKS, Anthony Chabot Equestrian Facility, a farrier ...and more!

Ornamental Horticulture

Meeting Time: Meet Saturday mornings once a month with rotating weekly maintenance and upkeep

Prepare, plan and plant decorative garden at Dimond Park. This project is largely a community service/learning project and counts as community service hours. Project will include require commitment to of time for watering and weeding.

Photography

Meeting Time: Weekend  (Saturday?) mornings beginning in late October

Basic photography instruction, local field trips, some post-processing hands-on and exhibits at local shows and the Alameda County Fair.

Poultry

Everything you need to know to raise a flock of backyard chickens: From building a coop to brooding chicks, what to feed and what to plant for them and how to sell your eggs. Also - basic chicken emergency medicine.

Primary Beginning 4-H

Project Leader: Emily Q., Janice G-L.
Meeting Time: Meetings take place during the business portion of our Community Club Meetings (2nd Monday of each month, 6:30pm).
Ages: 5 – 8 years old
Project Size: 30

Explore what 4-H is all about through discussion and activities. Members will sample various 4-H projects such as Arts & Crafts, Environmental Stewardship, Pets, and Community Service. Primary members may choose to enroll in another project as well, but the Beginning 4-H Project fulfills the project enrollment requirement of 4-H.

Public Speaking

Project Leader: Casey W., Keeley M.
Meeting Time: We'll choose the best 6:00 pm, Tue/Wed/Thurs for the group.

Learn to communicate effectively and influence others in a supportive group, like the "Masters of Toast".  We'll help each other deliver prepared speeches and impromptu, and offer constructive evaluation.

Rabbits

Sewing: Beginning – Intermediate Sewing and Fashion Revue

Meeting Time: Meets monthly in Oakland, usually the 4th Saturday afternoon of each month, subject to change. First meeting Sat., 10/25/14 from 2:30 pm – 4:30 pm.
Ages: 9+ (will consider others on a case by case basis)

Video Production (Beginning)

Meeting Time: Meets monthly weekends in Oakland, dates and times TBA.

Project Size: 6

Plan, script, film, and edit short videos and PSA’s (1-3 minutes). Creativity and experimentation encouraged. Enter final product into video contests and fair. Equipment not necessary. We will use various camera formats creatively.
